Layba Diawara comes from a family of griots (troubadours) from Guinea where he received the classical music of the Malinke culture in the tradition of his father and grandfather. The kora is a West African instrument, a kind of harp with a gourd as a sound box. In addition to kora, he also plays ngoni, guitar and marimba. As a marimba player he toured the traveled around the world with Bembeya Jazz and settled in Nijmegen about thirty years ago, where he still lives.
